Fiscal Year 2023 Food Policy Recommendations (2021)

After listening to more than 500 Philadelphians who either lead hunger relief work in their communities or attended the two public meetings hosted by the Urban Agriculture Plan, FPAC created its Fiscal Year 2023 (FY23) Policy Recommendations. These recommendations were chosen based on the impact they will have in FY23 and how well they: 

• Are led by people who have dealt with food injustice
• Meet the coexisting needs of people who grow food, work in restaurants, experience hunger, and provide food for communities 
• Address racism and transfer power and resources to historically disinvested communities 
• Align with the priorities of local food justice and sovereignty movements

On November 30, 2021, appointed members Dimka Braswell, Shayla Felton-Dorsey, Amy Goldstein, and Isel Otero-Vera presented FPAC’s Fiscal Year 2023 Policy Recommendations to leaders from Mayor Kenney’s administration.

Food Policy Platform (2018)

Since the release of FPAC’s last policy platform in 2014, A Philadelphia Food Policy Roadmap, the City has made great progress: Mayor Kenney established the Zero Waste and Litter Cabinet to help the City reach zero waste by 2035, City Council passed legislation promoting equitable water access in schools, and the Administration pledged to uphold healthy nutrition standards by passing a sugar-sweetened beverage tax. These policies demonstrate that Philadelphia is a leader in food policy and is moving towards a stronger, healthier, and more just food system.

In 2017-2018, FPAC members and public subcommittees updated the policy recommendations in the Road Map. The newly released 2018 Food Policy Policy Platform will help in continuing the city’s trajectory and FPAC is committed to supporting the Mayor, Administration, and City Council to move these policy recommendations forward. The recommendations have been drafted, vetted, and finalized by the collective expertise of FPAC’s members and public subcommittees. Click here for FPAC’s latest priorities!

A Philadelphia Food Policy Road Map (2014) 

FPAC released its food policy platform, A Philadelphia Food Policy Road Map, on Sunday, April 12, 2014 at the Philadelphia Food Policy and the Next Mayor Forum. The platform, developed by FPAC appointed members, is a guide for the next mayoral administration to help support a healthy, fair Philadelphia food system. The platform covers:

• • 20 facts about the Philadelphia food system;
  • 10 challenges and opportunities facing the Philadelphia food system; and
  • Recommendations to support the food system and improve the health of all Philadelphians.
